Why Choose a Specialty School?

A specialty school allows you to learn a certain technical skill or study with a specific person. Many specialty schools, such as farrier and equine massage schools, are designed to provide you with a skill that will enable you to find employment (or start your own business) immediately after graduation. Some of the schools offer apprenticeships or working-student arrangements that provide hands-on experience after graduation.

A specialty education can take less time to complete than a college or university degree. Specialty school programs can vary from a couple of months to just over a year. Upon completion you'll have a degree or certificate in your course of study.

Specialty schools represent more of the hands-on careers within the equine industry such as massage therapy, farrier/natural trimming, training, riding instructor, rider, etc. Having a certificate or being able to say you studied under a specific trainer can help further your career within those fields.

You may also decide to supplement a university education with a specialty school. Some specialty schools are linked with universities or community colleges, so be sure to ask them about the possibility of college credit and its transferability.

Why Choose a College or University

In your search for a horse school you have a lot of things to consider in pursuing the best education for your career choice. I want to talk about some of the reasons you might want to consider choosing a college or university with an equine program.

Students may choose a university because “that’s what their parents want.” Your parents could be concerned about your choice of careers/majors. Attending a college or university can be a good compromise for horsey teenagers and their parents. The student satisfies the parents by attending a university, and the equine major allows the student to pursue something that he or she loves and is interested in.

You might not know for sure what you want to do just that you want to be involved in horses. A college program gives you four years to explore and see where your strengths and weaknesses are. A nice well-rounded equine program will expose you to many different areas of the horse industry giving you a chance to try on several hats before deciding which one fits you.

When you complete a college or university, you will have an associate or bachelor degree in hand. This degree is there whether you choose to pursue a career in the equine industry or not. Because we live in a degree culture within the US many consider a bachelors degree to be the bare minimum that you need in today's job industry.

More and more we see older students coming back to colleges and universities to pursue a course of study. Sometimes these students are already horse professionals that decide they need that specialized study or degree to further their career choices, or individuals who have decided to change careers and enter the horse world and are most comfortable doing this within a structured course of study.
