Horse Schools FAQ For Parents Part 5

We can’t find a school that offers what our teen wants to study?

If your teen is interested in something specialized it’s likely that you won’t be able to find a college that will teach that skill, but that doesn’t mean your teen can’t pursue that interest while in college. Careers such as jockey, pro-rodeo rider, and natural horsemanship trainer generally aren’t offered as a course of study.  If you and your teen still want to pursue the college angle consider your teen attending the University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program (or colleges in New York and Kentucky that offer “racing programs”) where your teen can learn about the racing industry or your rodeo rider can look into colleges that have top teams that compete in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. During the summer, internships and apprenticeships can give them the hands-on experience they need. Some careers might be better pursued through a specialty school. If you can afford both, then by all means have your teen get a Equine Science degree and then attend the specialty school of their choice. But if he/she can’t you should seriously consider if a specialty school is more of what your teen needs.
